VMS, prevention falling

Interventions to prevent falling are always multifactorial and multidisciplinary, e.g.

Bed rails increase the risk of falls and should be avoided.

  • Adjustment of medication.
  • Optimizing vision and hearing.
  • Interventions aimed at the patient’s environment.
  • Education and information to patients and their loved ones.
  • Interventions aimed at improving mobility, such as training and stimulating mobility (possibly with a physiotherapist) and explanation about the use of aids.
  • Attention to the patient’s footwear.
  • Attention to ADL (possibly with occupational therapist).
  • Attention to toilet needs.
  • Interventions aimed at confusion/impaired cognition.
  • Interventions aimed at safety when the patient is in bed
