Mobility

Slow walking speed is an indicator of reduced mobility, which is a criterion for increased vulnerability of older people. A decline in walking speed is associated with earlier death.

Walking speed can be measured by having the person walk over a distance of 4 meters. Slower than 1.2 meters per second is considered a reduced walking speed. This information is especially important for determining vulnerability and, for example, when deploying interventions to improve walking. It is a good initial measurement with which the effectiveness of training can be determined.

Handgrip strength is an indication of sarcopenia, a loss of muscle mass. Due to this reduced handgrip strength and loss of muscle mass, older people are more likely to fall or develop other limitations. Handgrip strength can also be strengthened with training.
