Coping

A client may be frail but may also have developed effective strategies to manage his frailty.  This process is called coping. It is important for nurses/carers to identify the coping style  which clients use to strengthen the frail areas.  The coping style can offer clues to empower the self-management competency of the client.

Coping: combination of intellectual and emotional responses to stress or a problem and the resulting behaviour.

Coping style: There are different strategies and mechanisms of coping. People vary the mechanism they use depending on the circumstances and their coping style, which is related to their personality.
