VMS, prevention delirium

In case of early stage of delirium, it is important that the patient is surrounded by loved ones and/or family. It is also effective to place recognizable items. In this case the radio is important to Mrs. other things had e.g. could be photos, a large clock or calendar. It is also important to prevent people from becoming dehydrated after surgery. It is therefore important to maintain proper fluid and electrolyte balance.

 

Preventive measures for delirium are e.g.

  • Screening the medication for delirium-promoting properties.
  • Daily structure
  • The prevention and treatment of infections.
  • The prevention and treatment of dehydration and electrolyte disorders.
  • Adequate pain treatment.
  • Maintaining blood pressure.
  • Maintaining and improving nutritional status, with special attention and possible supplementation of B vitamins.
  • Providing information to the patient and his relatives.
  • Weighing the use of invasive interventions, such as catheters, against the risk of delirium.
  • Consulting experts in the field of delirium.
