VMS, prevention malnutrition

Preventive interventions for malnutrition are e.g.

  •  The nurse screens each patient for malnutrition upon admission to the hospital using: SNAQ or MUST.
  •  With a SNAQ score of 2 points or a MUST score of 1 point, there is moderate malnutrition. The patient receives energy- and protein-rich main meals and energy- and protein-rich intermediate meals. The nurse calls in the nutritional assistant and makes a note of the medical status.
  •  With a SNAQ score of 3 or more points or a MUST score of 2 or more points, there is serious malnutrition. The patient receives energy and protein-enriched food and treatment by a dietician (the nurse calls in the nutritional assistant and dietician (via the doctor), and makes a note in the medical status). The dietitian will be contacted within 24 hours of admission.
  • During the admission, the nurse monitors food intake and weight progress.
